This Sunday, five people who have been training for several months will run 13.1 miles in the New York City Half Marathon.
They are running with a purpose - as they have pledged to raise funds to help us provide free services to cancer patients and their families.
Although we might not be able to cheer them on from the sidelines, we can contribute $13.10 to give them a lift before Sunday's big event.
In fact, two of our half marathoners share their stories below - and we bet many of you can relate to their reasons for running.
Take a look at these stories and please consider honoring them with a gift of $13.10. One way to ensure no one faces cancer alone.
I am running for CSC in honor of my late mother, Rose Marie Libuser, whose life was taken by pancreatic cancer in December 2016. Rose's family, for our part, feel blessed to be brought into CSC's larger community and, in that vein, reaffirm our appreciation for all the support Rose herself received from friends, support groups, and even strangers.
I hope to pay forward all those heartwarming gestures beginning with my participation on behalf of CSC in the half marathon.
It wasn't until I was in high school, when my grandma was diagnosed, that I experienced what a cancer diagnosis means for a person and his or her family. Since then, however, the effects of cancer diagnoses have been everywhere, impacting so many of my friends and family and demonstrating to me that the fight against cancer is fought not just in the lab.
Whether finding peace in acceptance or discovering the energy to fight, patients and their friends and families are now relying not just on medicine but also on knowledge, action and community to navigate a cancer diagnosis. CSC is on the front lines of this battle, and it's an honor to run this half-marathon in support of its mission.
